Common Reasons Cars Fail Their MOT

MOST failures are caused by minor factors that can be easily picked up prior to booking a test. We outline below some simple checks that can be carried out in your own driveway prior to your test. Note that none of these checks require the use of any tools.

Lighting And Signalling

Engine lights: Check that all of the lights are working. This includes the indicators, and the number plate light. Test the brake lights by asking someone to stand behind the car while you press the brake pedal. Note: Check the lens for any signs of wear or damage as well as the bulb. Some damage to the lens can cause failure even though the bulb is ok.

Tyre Condition

The depth of your tread. Insert a 20p coin into the principle grooves of the tire and if you can see the outer rim then the tread is below the legal limit of 1.6mm. Check the tires for any signs of bulging or cuts, and make sure that all the tires on an axle are of the same size and type. All of these points are checked during an MOT test as wear on tires can cause accidents and so are classed as safety items.

Brake Performance

Test the brakes on a flat, smooth road. Brake gently to see if the car pulls to one side. Also listen for any signs of wear such as grinding or squealing. Test the handbrake by pulling it up on a steep hill. It should hold the car without you having to pull it up any further. If it feels slack then it may need checking. See also MOT Gloucester.

Suspension And Steering

Check for any signs of wear, for example when pushing down on the wheels they should return to their original position after a short period of time and not bounce up and down excessively. Also check the underside of your car for any signs of oil leaks or damage to the suspension units. Also check for any excessive movement when turning the steering wheel and ensure the wheels return to their original position as quickly as possible.

Windscreen And Visibility

Sit in the car and look for any fresh damage within your line of sight. Remember that even very small damage in your direct line of sight will fail to pass the test, but smaller damage off to the side may be acceptable to some testers. Test your screen wash and try to clean your windscreen with the wipers when they are dry.

Warning Lights And Fluid Levels

First list out any warning lights that are present after starting the car and then head off to check the oil level (with the dipstick) and coolant level (against the markers on the expansion tank). For MOT Gloucester testing, it’s worth noting that all of these checks can be done prior to testing and may even save a second trip for minor repairs. The actual test is then conducted by a qualified MOT tester and/or technician so it’s worth getting the easy ones out of the way first.

Don’t let a simple check fail your MOT test and remember most of these checks are FREE and can be done in your driveway prior to your test.
